Will wheatpaste damage leather?

I have a leather spine that a previous owner glued very strongly to the textblock and want to remove and replace. I was thinking of softening the adhesive up by coating the whole spine with wheatpaste but the leather is quite old and damaged; is it safe or is there a better alternative? Thanks!

The moisture will damage the leather for sure. Using a knife, like the bookbinding knife I sell will be the way to go. It is possible to get the tip of the blade between the leather and the spine. You may wind up with paper on the back of the spine but that is better than losing the leather.
