Strange assembly method

0

Didn’t know how else to title this one. New to this. I have a late 1800’s book that looks at first glance that it was “sewn into tapes” I think is the term. But the tapes are actually inserted through the sections instead of being sewn. As in, small slits were cut through the whole text block and the steps “sewn” through it. Maybe some odd repair? It just occurred to me I hadn’t looked close to see if that was orig or if it had initially been sewn the traditional way. How would you even make slits like that without destroying the paper?

Can you post a photo? I am uncertain what is happening with the sewing.

Well that is odd. It looks as if there is other sewing there as well.  I wonder if this is an attempt at repair? I may need more photos to solve the mystery.

I looked pretty close and dodnt see any, but I had already "improvised" putting it back together and I just can't remember what the deal was now. I think it was just those tapes and hide glue on the spine, but I'll try examining it even closer. I'll try another photo if I find a different view.
