Spines Glued to Text Block?

0

Hi Sophia

Questions on two books. This is the first one, it looks like the cloth was just glued onto the back of the text block, is that something publishers did or do you think it was done later? If it’s original would it be ok to use paste to reattach?

This second one has a paper binding and I’m pretty sure with this one it was just glued but wanted to get your opinion. Also, the cover is so dirty. I have a dry cleaning pad and the Staedler eraser would those be worth trying? Or a barely moist cloth?

Thank you,

Anil

          Hi Anil,

Interesting projects! You are on the right track with the cleaning ideas. Test in small areas. Regarding the spines, those were definitely glued as a "repair." The key now is to remove the glued spine and clean off the glue or stabilize the cloth. You will need to create a hollow to get the covers back to their normal case-bound normalcy. I hope you post after photos! Cheers.
