The first book had a cloth tape on both sides of the spine that was detaching when I bought it a few years ago. It kept snagging on things so I was able to gently remove most of it but there’s lots of residual glue. I’ve tried gently scraping with the book repair knife to little effect. I don’t want to push to hard and remove the paper either. Any tips? Or is best left as-is?

The second book was taped together from multiple places. It’s also a cloth tape but seems to use a different glue? I’ve cut away any part of the tape that had detached but I’m curious if removing the rest from the cover at least is feasible.

I don’t know if this will help with identifying the glues used but the first book is from 1934 and the second from 1914.

Thank you,

Anil
