Repairing detached cover

0

I have a few older books with detached covers, meaning the cover is completely removed  from the rest of the book itself while the spine and back cover are still firmly attached. Would help to find some illustrated instructions but any advice would help on how to reattach front cover. Most instructions are for situations where the cover is still some how attached but not completely detached.

Hi Robert, This course should give you some ideas. Can you post a photo of the issue? I am mostly interested in the spine. Is there a hollow or is it a tight-back?

Best,

~Sophia

Hi Sophia. I'm attaching photos of 2 different books that have tight back spines which is the most common type I  have in need of repair. I have over 50 books covering American exploration and travel published from the late 1700s to mid 1800s. My goal is not to restore them to "collectables" but rather to keep them in a usable condition and prevent additional damage.

I bought the lesson you suggested on attaching boards and it was just what I  needed. I do have a couple of questions. Could I  use just PVA and not paste or a combination of PVA and paste as recommended? Secondly, it seems that the reattached board won't be  very secure for reading purposes, even with a mylar cover, so could I  use hinge tape or tissue to reinforce it? Most of my books have off white paste down and fly leaf so white tape or tissue wouldn't  be a problem.
