Recommended Order of Repairs?

Hi Sophia

My dad asked if I could repair and strengthen this book. It was a few issues and I’m wondering what order I should tackle them in.

It’s a copy of a religious book, the Mahabharata, published in India in the 60s. Due to length of the book, the paper stock is relatively thin compared to what I’ve seen in novels from the era though not as thin as what I’ve seen in bibles. The original spine is totally gone and both hinges separated. The the cloth backing is actually in pretty good shape but the sewing on many of the signatures is loose. Then there are a few pages that are totally detached.

Do you have recommendations on the best order to tackle these? I’m thinking tighten/re-sew the signatures, add the new spine, and then re-attach the detached pages but I’m just guessing. What order would you recommend? Also, which classes would you recommend for guidance?

Thank you,

Many times the correct order is nebulous because you can work on the cover and the text-block separately.  There are several courses that could help. The re-case a book in 7 lessons might be the best most thorough one. I agree that the pages can get tipped in last unless they are in the way then just go ahead and get it done first.
