OK to Leave Tape on a Jacket?

0

Hi Sophia

I’m working on my “Hi Ho Pinocchio” jacket and have a question. There was a lot of tape on the jacket. Much of it was barely attached to the paper and I was able to remove with the book repair knife. It had already pulled a lot of the color off when it became unglued so I was reluctant to try and separate it much more. Also in some places it was the only thing holding the paper together. I’ve backed those areas sekishu to stabilize them but left any tape that wouldn’t come off easily. Would leaving the tape on cause much damage down the road? My thinking is that it’s already been on probably for decades and any additional damage would be less than the damage cause by removing it but I wanted to see what you thought too.

Thank you,

Anil

In cases where the tape is not coming off well you can leave it. I will use deacidification solution on the verso side of the tape to mitigate the acid. I am tempted to suggest a poultice of methyl cellulose to help remove that old masking tape. Hmmm.

    Hope that helps!

Cool. Thank you. I will leave for now but keep the other ideas in my back pocket for future skills to try and learn!
