Japanese Tissue thoughts

0

Videos on You Tube, the seven part Fairy Tales Live Restoration. The “second” portion of Part 1 has a small discussion regarding tissue paper. At approximately 41:48 into that video, as the hinging tissue is being employed to repair a tear, there is also a brief look at the Kozo Kashmir and mention of the sekishu – all three contained in the page repair kit. The topic of tissue paper, pros/cons, uses, costs, etc. becomes extensive very quickly. The difference between hinging tissue at 12 gsm and the Kozo Kashmir at 10gsm seems very small – is there a significant difference in strength and/or transparency? Is there a good source for an overview of this topic? Any quick comments would be appreciated.

Tissue (and paper) thickness and strength are important concepts to understand. Thickness does not equate to strength. Strength is created mostly through the length of the fibers that make up the paper, but it also has to do with the quality of those fibers. It is generally agreed that Kozo fibers make the best papers and tissues. The tricky thing is to make nearly see-through tissues that can be used over text or illustrations that have enough strength so they don't fall apart as you are trying to apply them. For page repairs you actually want very little strength. Less than you would think anyway. The Conservator ideal is a repair that is so thin that if you stressed the tear area, the paper would not tear along the edge of the tissue repair and would instead tear along the original tear.  I try to explain the best uses for these tissues in my videos, but honestly, any Conservator will tell you that you just have to try them out to see what works best.  That is why I have put small amounts of the three main types of tissue in the Page Repair Kit. It is rather expensive to buy full sheets of these things which are about 30 inches by 20 inches or so. If you buy only the minimum thing to do page repairs get the hinging tissue and some paste. If you only get the minimum thing for hinge repairs, get the Sekishu. I hope this helps!
