Quick update: I created a free course on Shipping your Books safely!

Great question. I recently watched a video from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences to learn more about this and I encourage you to watch it too.

The summary of what I remember is that the virus is not going to live on paper or cardboard longer than 24 hours but it can live on plastics up to 72 hours and metal (in certain circumstances) up to 9 days. I say remember rather than learned because I really want you to go to the source yourself. My memory may be incorrect about exact numbers.

Basically, what I do when I get a job in is I let is sit unopened in the package for a week. When I pack it up again to ship back, I disinfect my hands and everything else as necessary.

I hope that helps. It is nice to hear from you and I hope you are safe and well!

Sophia. Thank you for the swift response. It is good to hear from a person who is dealing with this specific situation. Based on what I have been reading, I came to a similar conclusion. I had not thought of the returning part though. It should be comforting for the client to know about the precautions you take and I will make sure to include this in my conversations.

I briefly checked out the video from IMLS. It appears to be AUDIO only? I will watch it later. Thank you for the link.

I am very fortunate to live on a wooded piece of land including a deer fenced in garden. I can go outside, breathe freely and get rid of pent up energy/anxiety by working in the yard.

    Be well

    Gudrun
