| Private answer Thanks for putting the word in context! Off-gassing is something that occurs in plastics and other things. Think about a new foam mattress that has to sit out for a day because it is smelly. Off-gas means emitting a chemical (that can sometimes smell). Even some books can off-gas. For instance, I know of a situation where a clamshell box was made for a rare book, but the chemical off-gassing from the special materials in the cover caused the book to disintegrate faster than if it had been left out of the box.
